Football Sri Lanka conducts successful Super League meeting with Clubs
In its efforts to launch the first-ever Semi-Professional Football League in the country, Football
Sri Lanka conducted a successful online meeting via Zoom on the 20th of January 2021, with the
Minister of Sports Hon. Namal Rajapakse and the Director-General of Sports Medicine at the
Medicine Institute at the Sports Ministry, Dr. Lal Ekanayakka in attendance.
In his views, the Minister extended his fullest support and assistance to develop the game of
football in Sri Lanka and elaborated the importance of elevating the game to a professional level
if we are to achieve international recognition and achievements to gain a better FIFA ranking in
the game. He also stated that his vision is to establish another professional-level tournament,
which is a city-based franchised system so that more players would have the opportunity to play
elite-level football while developing a strong brand image for the game at the regional level
around the Island.
During the meeting, Football Sri Lanka (FFSL) finalized the dates for the upcoming Super League
as follows;
February 17th, 2021 - commencement of Pre- Season matches
March 10th, 2021 - End of Pre-Season
April 17th, 2021 - Launch of Super League
July 30th, 2021 - End of the Super League 2021 Season
During the Super League, there shall be two break periods to allow players for National duty
during the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Asian Qualifiers Round II matches.
The FFSL first Player Registration window shall be open from 25 January until 28 February 2021
and the second window shall be open from 15 July to 15 August 2021 for all clubs to register
players both on-loan and on transfer.
With the current COVID-19 situation health and safety is a top priority, therefore, Football Sri
Lanka will adhere to all health regulations stipulated by the authorities during the Pre Session
Training Games and will incur the extra burden and cost related to these health guidelines.
