Sri Lanka Womens Football Team Moved 11 Steps Ahead in FIFA Rankings

Despite not participating in international competitions for nearly a year, the Sri Lanka women's soccer team is 117th in the world, 11 steps ahead in the world women's rankings.

The Sri Lankan team is 11 places ahead, but it is based on the fact that the teams that were ahead of the Sri Lankan team are losing more and more matches. According to the Asian rankings, Sri Lanka is ranked 19th out of 20 countries.

Sri Lanka failed to excel at the 13th SAG Sports Festival in Kathmandu last December, the last international event in which women (soccer) participated in the event. Sri Lanka's defeat to hosts Nepal (1-0), India (6-0) and Maldives (2-1) shattered their medal hopes.

India are ranked 53rd, Nepal 92nd and Maldives 128th in the rest of the South Asian region. But Bangladesh, Bhutan and Pakistan were not included in the December 18 rankings. It is reported that the Pakistan women's football team has not participated in an international football match for nearly two years.

Only a handful of women participate in the women's football tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Football Federation. Only teams from the three Armed Forces participated in the 2018 National Tournament.

In 2010, Sri Lanka participated in an international football (women's) match for the first time and lost 8-1 to India. The 16-0 defeat of Sri Lanka in a match against Myanmar in 2015 was the biggest defeat for the Sri Lankan women's team so far. Sri Lanka's 4-0 win over Bhutan in 2010 was the highest ever.  During this period, Sri Lanka also recorded victories against Maldives, Pakistan and Singapore in international football (women's).
