The highly anticipated Super League kicks off on February 17 + INSIDE STORY

FFSL makes history with another milestone with the launching of the first-ever
professional football league competition, under the brand name of ‘Super League’, from
the 17th of February 2021, at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The Super League competition has been the talk of the town among all of the Sri Lankan
football fraternity for the past few months and has been restructured on a few occasions,
to suit the current health & safety guidelines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Super League is a great initiative for the development of the Sri Lankan National Team,
as well as for the top-tier clubs to step into the professional football industry with
commercial and economic benefits.

FFSL has selected ten top-tier clubs through a strict club licensing criterion on par with
international standards. These clubs are now shaping up their operations to transform
into vibrant professional footballing entities, similar to European Football Clubs.

Although the original format was designed with the home & away concept consisting of
90 games in a round-robin system, the format had to be changed due to the health
guidelines and safety purposes. In this regard, FFSL rearranged the format to a single
leg-based format, where the competition will be limited to 45 games, with 9 games per
club.

To provide adequate preparation periods for the players and clubs during the pandemic
period, FFSL has created a new platform under the theme of ‘Pre-Season’. This
arrangement will see the 10 clubs divided into 2 groups equally, where each one of them
will face 4 games during this Pre-Season period. This Pre-Season results will not be
considered in the original Super League version.

“This becomes a great moment for Sri Lankan Football, to see a new standard of
competition and development through the Super League. I thank all stakeholders
who worked behind this concept and gratitude to FIFA, AFC, and Clubs for making
this professional League a reality. In the long run, we need players, coaches,
referees, and others who shall become direct entities in football to be professional
and support to elevate our standards at an international level” Expressed Anura De
Silva, President of FFSL.
